FINE ARTS

ART

 

Title:ART I                                                                                  811000

Description:  The thrust of this course is basic drawing, two-dimensional composition and color using a variety of art media and techniques creatively applied in the study of famous artists.                        

 

Title: ART II                                                                                     812000

Prerequisite:  Art I                                                                                         

 

Description: This course will include teaching advanced techniques in a variety of drawing media dealing with contemporary concepts in visual expression in the following media: pencil, charcoal, pastels, oil and chalk, colored pencils, inks, and graphite sticks.  Linoleum block printing techniques will be included.

Prerequisite:  Art I, Art II and approval of instructor                                   

 

Description:  This course encourages the development of individual style in artworks using a variety of themes, visual expression and imagery.  Students gain experience in creating works of art using a variety of art media.

Prerequisite:  Art I, Art II & Art III and approval of instructor                   

 

Description:  Approval of instructor is recommended.  This is a self-directed study of problems using media of the student's choice. Selection and execution of a series of projects in the student's selected area(s) will include:  painting (acrylic and/or oil and watercolors), sculpture, graphics, crafts, ceramics/pottery, printmaking, and commercial art.

Description:  The thrust of this course is to introduce college-bound students to the arts:  drama, dance, music, and the visual arts (visual and performing arts).  This course is based on the need for each college-bound student to gain some knowledge about the arts, to help improve performance on the ACT, and to help them achieve a well-rounded education.  Emphasis will be placed on the study of the arts from the viewpoint of aesthetic values.

Description: Includes lecture and discussion on the visual arts with emphasis on how and why works have been created in our own and earlier times. All major forms of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, design, and architecture are explored in basic terms.

Description: A prerequisite to all other theater courses, embracing historical information, structure of dramatic works, scenery building, and basic acting skills development.

Description: This is a practical course to develop good acting techniques.  Exercises in role preparation and character building lead to performing on stage.

Description: A basic practicum in acting, directing, props, scenery, lighting, costumes, makeup, house, and publicity.  Students will act and / or work backstage on scenes and one act plays.

Description: This course is an advanced practical course to develop good techniques of character analysis, physical and vocal interpretation, and performance through individual and group exercises.  Students will present scenes from classic and modern dramatic literature and will perform in one-act plays.

 

Music - Choir

 

Title: BEGINNING CHOIR                                                 825000

Description:  This course is designed for students who are new to music. Students will learn the fundamentals of singing, theory, and sight-reading.  This choir participates in both the Christmas and Spring concerts. Students must provide their own uniform.

 

Title: INTERMEDIATE CHOIR                                          827100

Description: This course is designed for students who have experience in sight-reading and basic singing skills.  Students will thoroughly study the following topics: performance singing, sight-reading, and choral discipline. This choir participates in fall musical events, a Christmas and Spring concert, District Festival, Solo & Ensemble Festival, and a spring “Road Trip” competition.

 

Title: ADVANCED CHORUS (Acappella Choir)                826100

Description: This course is designed for students who can accurately sight-read, have experience singing in foreign languages, and can carry their part with ease.  This performing ensemble participates in fall music events, Christmas and Spring concerts, District Festival, Solo & Ensemble Festival and a Christmas “Road Trip” Performance event.

 

Title: SMALL VOCAL ENSEMBLE                                    821700

Description: This course is Tara High School’s top choir, which includes singing and dancing in a “Broadway Style.”  This choir performs year round at school and community events.  Members must be committed to attend rehearsals outside of the school day.  This performing ensemble participates in fall music events, Christmas and Spring concerts, District Festival, Solo & Ensemble Festival, a Christmas “Road Trip” Performance event, the spring musical, and the show choir competition.

 

Music - band

***Please note that any student participating in the Marching Band is required to participate in a week long Pre-Season Camp held over the summer from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. one week or two weeks prior to the start of school.  There will also be after school rehearsals held from 2:35 - 4:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Description:  This course is recommended for any student interested in learning to play a musical instrument and required for students with no musical training that are interested in marching or Advanced band.  There is a mandatory $40.00 instrument user fee for students who do not provide their own instrument.  Some instruments are available for student use; they are on a first come first served basis.  All students will be responsible for all supplies pertaining to his/her instruments. (reeds, key oil, valve oil, etc.)

In this course emphasis will be placed on proper intonation, buzzing, breath control, phrasing, rhythms, technique and elementary sight-reading. There is a mandatory $40.00 instrument user fee for students who do not provide their own instrument.  Some instruments are available for student use; they are on a first come first served basis  All students will be responsible for all supplies pertaining to his/her instruments. (reeds, key oil, valve oil, etc.)

 

Title: ADVANCED BAND                                                     842200

Prerequisite: Audition required

Fee: $40.00

 

Description: A course emphasizing all components of performance methods as they relate to large and small ensemble playing.  Proper intonation, buzzing breath control, phrasing, advanced rhythms, technique and medium to advanced sight-reading are some of the topics that will be addressed.  This class is not classified as honors but it is treated as an accelerated courses.  Students must participate in Marching Band unless excused by the director.   There is a $40 instrument user fee and any applicable Marching Band fee. After school rehearsals and performances are mandatory.

Prerequisite: 2 years experience and Director’s approval                             

Fee: $40.00:  uniform rental, instrument repair and music

 

Description: A course emphasizing performance methods as they relate to Advanced and Marching Percussion ensembles.   The student must participate in Marching Band unless excused by the Director.  After school rehearsals and performances are mandatory.  There is a mandatory $40.00 instrument user fee and any applicable Marching Band fees.  The student will be responsible for purchasing all mallets pertinent to his/her instrument.

 

Title: JAZZ ENSEMBLE                                                       822200

Prerequisite: 2 years experience and Audition

Description: The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop skills in Jazz performance through knowledge of styles & performance techniques of varied Jazz and Contemporary literature.  This class is not classified as honors but it is treated as an accelerated course.  After school rehearsals and performances are mandatory.  There is a mandatory $40.00 instrument user fee for students who do not provide their own instrument.  Percussionist must use Tara High School Band Equipment. Some instruments are available for student use.  They are on a first come first serve basis.  All students will be responsible for all supplies pertaining to his/her instruments. (reeds, key oil, valve oil, etc.)

 

Music - Strings

Description:  This course is designed for the student that wishes to learn how to play a strings instrument as well as to read music.  Students will participate in concerts throughout the year.
